Description

Some Stearmans get flown. This one gets flown and fussed over — and after nearly 20 years with the same careful owner, it shows. The seller doesn't undersell it either, calling this Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet "perhaps the best and most original Stearman available for sale."

The Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet — officially the Stearman Model 75 — was built as a primary trainer for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. This particular aircraft, registration N75010, U.S. Army Air Corps Serial No. 41-8741, is a fine example of the iconic wartime trainer. Its Continental W-670 engine is exactly what distinguishes the “17” designation from its Lycoming- and Jacobs-powered siblings. It is a tandem, open-cockpit biplane with fixed conventional gear and classic tube-and-fabric construction — a genuine taildragger with real wartime pedigree.

What makes this Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet stand out from other Stearmans on the market?

Originality and low time, according to the seller — and the details back it up. This aircraft carries Redline Brakes, an MT-Propeller, an inertia starter that can be spun by handcrank or electric starter, a full rubber tailwheel, and a set of upgrades the seller simply describes as "many more goodies." Combined with 100% original Army colours and stencils, it's positioned as both a serious classic aircraft collector piece and, in the seller's words, "a perfect daily fun generator."

According to the seller, this aircraft was once flown by Tom Cruise in a Mission Impossible movie — a detail buyers may want to verify independently through the aircraft's documented history, but a fitting footnote for a warbird this well cared for. Here are some footage:

Powerplant, Systems & Technical Highlights

This Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet pairs its wartime-trainer heritage with a genuinely thoughtful set of modern upgrades — the kind that make a taildragger this size easier to own and fly regularly.

  • Engine: Continental W-670-6A radial

  • Time since major overhaul: approx. 150 hours (TSMOH)

  • Last inspection: Completed by Dachsel, approx. 45 hours ago

  • Propeller: MT 248 R 132-GAJ, 45 hours since new — described by the seller as "the best prop for a Stearman, running smooth and gives you a lot of power, like new"

  • Brakes: Redline Brakes fitted

  • Starting system: Inertia starter, operable by handcrank or electric starter

  • Tailwheel: Full rubber tailwheel

  • Avionics: Trig TY91 radio, Trig TT21 transponder, Kannad 406 ELT

  • Comfort/utility options: Oil pre-heater with 220V converter, NAV lights and strobe

How does this aircraft's equipment compare to a stock wartime Stearman?

Honest ownership note: With 150 hours TSMOH and only 45 hours since a 2015 restoration, this Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet sits well within a comfortable operating window — but as with any classic aircraft, a hands-on checkout with an experienced instructor is the right next step before purchase, which the seller explicitly welcomes.

Exterior & Cockpit

The seller rates this Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet's exterior a straightforward 10 — "just gorgeous" — and the details support the claim.

Exterior highlights:

  • 100% original Army colours and stencils, preserving genuine wartime warbird authenticity

  • Overall condition rated 10/10, "in and out"

  • Full aircraft cover and a dedicated canopy cover included

  • Classic tube-and-fabric biplane construction on fixed taildragger gear

Cockpit and interior highlights:

  • Interior condition described by the seller as "Like NOS" (new old stock)

  • Tandem, open-cockpit two-seat layout, true to the type's original trainer configuration

  • Modern conveniences layered in without disturbing the vintage character — NAV lights, strobe, and a 220V oil pre-heater for easier cold-weather starts

Between the original Army markings, the "Like NOS" interior, and a 10/10 exterior rating from an owner of nearly 20 years, this Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet presents like an aircraft that's spent its life being protected, not just flown.

The Perfect Airplane For

Who is this Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet best suited for?

This Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet suits a buyer who wants a genuinely turnkey warbird — low time, well-documented, and ready to fly, not a project to inherit.

  • Warbird and vintage biplane collectors seeking a genuinely original, well-preserved WWII-era trainer

  • Taildragger pilots who want a well-upgraded example rather than a bare, unmodernized original

  • Buyers who value long-term, single-owner history — nearly 20 years with the same careful custodian

  • Pilots who want both a collector piece and a regular flyer, per the seller's own "daily fun generator" framing

  • Buyers drawn to a well-documented backstory, including the seller's claim of a notable past flight

Good fit if…

Worth a second thought if…

You want a low-time, thoroughly upgraded Stearman ready to fly now

You're looking for an unrestored, fully original example instead

You value modern conveniences (electric start, modern avionics, pre-heater)

You want a period-correct aircraft with zero modern additions

You're comfortable arranging an in-person checkout with an instructor

You need to buy remotely, sight unseen

You appreciate a well-documented single-owner history

You're not interested in verifying seller-provided provenance claims

The seller invites serious buyers to come see the aircraft in person and complete a checkout with a competent, experienced flight instructor — with hangar space and full service available at Hildesheim (EDVM), Germany, if needed. For the right buyer, this Boeing Stearman PT-17 Kaydet offers exactly what the seller promises: a genuine classic aircraft that's just as happy sitting at a fly-in as it is flying to one.
